Aged stock review
FBA Inventory and inventory age reports read by SKU, with units likely to enter the next surcharge band listed first.
CommerceKind is an Amazon agency that helps brands clear excess and aged FBA inventory. Our in-house team checks which units are about to hit the aged inventory surcharge, works out what each slow product is worth at today’s price, and clears it the cheapest way: pricing, coupons and deals, Outlet, ads, multi-channel orders, FBA Liquidations, or removal and disposal. Then we fix forecasting and reorders so the same stock does not pile up again.

Each slow product given a route based on net recovery: sell through, discount, liquidate, remove or dispose.
Pricing, coupons, Prime Exclusive Discounts, deals, Outlet and targeted ads used to move stock that still has demand.
FBA Liquidations, removal orders to your warehouse or 3PL, and disposal compared on cost and what you get back.
Storage fees, the low-inventory-level fee and FBA capacity limits managed together, so clearing old stock frees room for winners.
Reorder points, order sizes and inbound timing reset from real sales, so excess does not come back.
| Route | How it works | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Sell-through | Price changes, coupons, deals and ads to raise sales velocity | The product still sells and has margin to give |
| Outlet and deals | Discounted stock surfaced in Amazon Outlet and deal placements | Overstock where a deeper discount is acceptable |
| FBA Liquidations | Amazon sells the units to wholesale buyers for a fraction of value | Stock with little chance of selling at retail |
| Removal order | Units shipped back to you or a 3PL for other channels | Stock you can sell on Shopify, TikTok Shop, Walmart or wholesale |
| Disposal | Units disposed of by Amazon | Stock with no realistic resale value |

Amazon charges an aged inventory surcharge, previously called the long-term storage fee, on FBA units that have been in its fulfillment network for 181 days or more. It is assessed from a snapshot on the 15th of each month, on top of the regular monthly storage fee, and it rises as units get older, with the highest rates on stock held more than a year. Age is counted first-in, first-out across the network, so the oldest units are treated as sold first. Some categories, such as clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry and watches, are excluded from the early bands in the US. Amazon sets and updates the rates, so we always work from your Seller Central fee reports.
Liquidation and disposal recover little or nothing, so we start with stock that still has demand: a sharper price, a coupon or deal, Outlet placement, or ads aimed at the search terms that still convert. We check every discount against margin and against how it might affect your price elsewhere. See our Amazon deals and coupons management and Amazon pricing strategy pages.
For stock that will not sell at retail in time, we compare what FBA Liquidations would return against the cost of a removal order and selling the units through another channel, such as your website, TikTok Shop, Walmart or wholesale, or through Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment. Disposal is the last option, for units with no realistic resale value.
Excess stock does more than add fees. It uses FBA capacity you need for products that sell. At the same time, running too lean can trigger Amazon’s low-inventory-level fee on fast sellers. We manage both ends together, so you hold enough of what sells and not too much of what does not. See our Amazon inventory management agency and Amazon FBA fee reduction pages, and the profitability turnaround case study.
Most excess comes from forecasts built on a good month, large minimum order quantities or launches that missed. We reset reorder points from real sales, plan around Prime Day and Q4, and flag slow products early, before they reach the surcharge bands. Agencies can offer this under their own brand through our white-label Amazon inventory management.

Watch inventory age before units reach 181 days, sell slow stock through with pricing, deals and ads, and use liquidation or removal for stock that will not sell in time. Better forecasting keeps it from building up.
It is an Amazon program that sells eligible excess FBA units to wholesale buyers, returning a small share of the item’s value to you after fees. It is useful for stock with little chance of selling at retail.
It depends on what each route returns. If you can sell the units through another channel, a removal order often recovers more than liquidation. Disposal is for stock with no realistic resale value. We compare them per SKU.
In Seller Central, the FBA Inventory tool and inventory age reports show units by age and flag those likely to be charged the surcharge soon. We review them with you.
It is an FBA fee on products whose stock is low compared with their sales. It is the opposite problem to excess inventory, so we plan stock to avoid both.
